Weymouth has a rich maritime history whilst Portland is famous for its stone quarries whose limestone were used to build many of London’s finest buildings including St Paul’s Cathedral. Portland is also known for its prisons which still dominate the island. Portland Harbour played an important role in D-Day and will star in the 2012 Olympic games.

Weymouth is well served by the railway and bus network; there is also a ferry service to the channel islands.
