A visit to the Natural History Museum

Today Elias and I went to the Natural History Museum in south Kensington. Despite being very busy (due to the combination of the weather and the summer holidays) we had a wonderful time, especially with the life-sized working model of the T-Rex. The model whale and dinosaur skeletons were also a big hit.

Electric Unicycling Tricks – 10-Pass Piggy-in-the-Middle Penny Spin Boomerangs

This week’s video is of some ten pass piggy-in-the-middle penny spin boomerangs. I added them to the edit at double speed as they can be a little boring to watch at normal speed! If I could work out how to cut out the precession then this would be an amazing trick. Part of the problem is that the car-park is not completely flat, and the wheel is not centrally balanced. I have also included some better footage of normal piggy-in-the-middle penny spin boomerangs from Crystal Palace Park.

Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath

Following on from a meeting at The Royal Free Hospital, I spent my lunch hour wheeling up Parliament Hill to enjoy the view over London. The conditions were not great for photography (I didn’t even have my camera) but was still well worth the visit!

Spinning Practice @ Crystal Palace Park

This morning I headed down to one of my favourite spots in Crystal Palace park to practice with my electric unicycle. Unfortunately it was too slippery for cone practice so I ended up doing an hour and half of spinning practice.

Sewing practice – tote bag 2

Below is a photograph of a second tote bag I made this morning for practice, rather than head outside into the cold and snow. This one was made out of striped fabric with a plain white cotton lining.

El-wire back pack

Over the last couple of days I have modified my Lowe Alpine Airzone backpack so that it can glow with the aid of  a piece of Tron coloured El-wire. The el-wire is attached to the pack by means of small rings which I have sewn onto the back pack. I went for a symmetrical pattern which traces both sides of the path of the zip. The el-wire can easily be removed if required. The driver and battery is stored in the top pocket of the bag.

Neopixel Strip Light Painting Wand

Continuing my fascination with light painting, this weekend a strip of 144 neoPixels arrived in the post so I followed several tutorials to create two different light painting wands.

The first tutorial was on the Arduino Basics website:

The second was from the Adafruit Industries website:

Square Knot Mat

Below is my first attempt at making a “Square Knot Mat”. I used 8mm rope and made 4 passes around the pattern. It took me about 20 minutes to get it looking like in the photograph.
It is possible to make the mat with a single piece of rope but I struggled to get the turn at the end of the pass looking right so opted to use separate lengths for each.

Ninebot One Electric Unicycle | Tron Costume #2

A second attempt at making a video combining my Tron outfit and Ninebot One. I’m getting better at spinning in the dark.

Ninebot One Electric Unicycle | Tron Costume #1

A short video of me riding my Ninebot One whilst wearing my Tron outfit that I made using an El-panel kit and a black tracksuit. This was something that I had wanted to do since watching Tron in the 1980s. I got up seriously early to go and film this sequence! I’m really pleased with the results, I hope to improve the costume by adding a head piece and some strips along the arms. I can also adjust the lighting on the Ninebot One. At some point it would be fun to try some long-exposure photography (light-painting) with this.
