2011 – | Pharmacy IT Manager

Key Achievements:

  • Migration from Windows XP to Windows 10 (GSTT were the first large hospital in the world to move to Windows 10).
  • Upgrade from JAC v5.01 to JAC v2014 including the provision of a new dedicated test environment.
  • Facilitated the novation for the transfer of the third party pharmacy outpatient provider from Sainsburys to LloydsPharmacy.
  • Amalgamation of dispensary and store location including the installation and commissioning of a BD Double VMAX automated dispensing system.
  • Upgrade of JAC Pharmacy system from v4.47 to 5.01 to address capacity and performance issues, and also to provide the locality functionality that was necessary to allow a third party partner to join the trust in using the system for outpatient dispensing.
  • Reconfiguration JAC Pharmacy system to allow outsourcing of the outpatient pharmacy services to a third party partner (Sainsbury’s)
  • Worked closely with third-party partner (Sainsbury’s) to ensure that the systems provided the necessary functionality to allow them to use the system effectively.
  • Remapping  and re-validation the department’s catologue of 600+ monthly reports that are run against the JAC Pharmacy system.
  • Creation and validation of a second set of reports to run against the second database locality.
  • Development of weekly and monthly reports to assist Sainsbury’s in monitoring of their locality.
  • Development of various automated systems to monitor the health of the various Pharmacy IT systems.
  • Development of web-based “on demand” multi-locality reporting for JAC pharmacy system.
  • Mini-project to upgrade all Pharmacy desktop PCs to a minimum specification of 2GB RAM to address performance issues and also prepare for the JAC Pharmacy upgrade. This initial project has now been adopted for implementation across the rest of the trust.
  • Upgrade of all accessory infrastructure (servers and software) to currently supported versions (addressing both performance and support issues for each of the applications).
  • Implementation of three separate instances of the Powergate e-commerce suite (for GSTT Pharmacy and the two new Sainsbury’s outpatient pharmacies).
  • Re-development of the internal pharmacy intranet.
  • Development of a much closer working relationship between Pharmacy IT and the main IT department to improve outcomes for the Pharmacy department and their customers.
  • Creation and updating of Pharmacy IT procedures to ensure that all tasks are covered by a related SOP.
  •  Updating of the support Wiki pages relating to Pharmacy IT to ensure that all of the systems are comprehensively documented.

Key Skills

Oral Communication Skills

I have excellent communication skills, and always build a good rapport with both colleagues and customers. In my present position I have to communicate technical messages to general practitioners and other health care professionals in a concise and timely manner. In previous posts I have had to communicate with a wide variety of people ranging from senior health care professionals through to customers/patients with a poor understanding of English. I have also developed the ability to successfully deal with distressed clients and patients. This has meant that I have developed the ability to communicate at a range of different levels depending on situation.

Written Communication Skills

During my time at university I developed sound written communication skills whilst preparing concise scientific reports. I have neat legible handwriting, can type at a reasonable speed and also have four years experience in using voice recognition software.

Team Work

I perform well under pressure as I work quickly and logically. I am comfortable working on my own, or as an integral member of a team – in my present position I do both. I am able to adapt to new situations quickly and am always willing to learn new skills. I also enjoy passing on my knowledge, ideas and experience. For example, in my current position I have been providing computer training to new members of staff.

Time Management

Whilst studying at university I worked evenings, weekends and vacations in a busy hospital outpatient dispensary where I have demonstrated reliability and the ability to work with limited support – this also meant I had to utilise effective time management skills.

Analytical and Problem Solving

During my degree I developed methods for critical analysis and problem solving. I am a great believer in utilising evidence based practices and scientific enquiry to find practical solutions to problems and to improve efficiency. I always try to look at problems and solutions objectively and have a demonstrated ability to ‘think outside the box’.

Digital Media

I regularly use digital media (photography and cinematography) together with various editing suites (photoshop or Gimp for pictures). I compose music using keyboards and computer based software (Reason). I have experience in the use of the following digital formats: minidisc, CD, DVD, SD, xD, memory stick, Zip drives, USB drives.

Information Management & Security

I am familiar with LIMS (laboratory information management systems) and  also understand the importance of confidentiality regarding data (be it patient or other records). I treat computer security very seriously and take all measures to avoid security issues on my computers (install the latest updates and also use antivirus and firewall software).

Web Development

I have built and maintained a number of internet and intranet websites and applications.

I have an excellent understanding of the concept of accessibility and always strive to keep myself up to date with the latest developments in web browsers and servers, whilst also maintaining backwards compatibility. I am acutely aware of the security issues surrounding the internet and understand the laws and issues surrounding privacy and data protection.

I have the ability to produce fully functional templates and plugins for Joomla and Word Press from scratch or modify existing ones. I have a good grasp of digital design concepts and understand the importance of delivering  form with function.

  • In 2004 I undertook a five month 1000 km solo kayak trip down the east coast of Australia between Cairns and Cape Palmerston.
  • I  completed numerous solo treks including a ten day 240 km trek in far north Queensland which included climbing Queensland’s highest mountain.
  • In July 2009 I completed a 100 km four day canoe trip across Scotland along the Caledonian Canal.
  • In 2010 I completed a 1300 km solo sea kayaking trip from Lands End to Inverness.
  • In 2011 I spent eight months living in a Teepee in Wiltshire.
  • In 2011 I completed the three peaks challenge (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon).
  • In 2013 I completed a 10 day solo kayak trip from Penzance to Charmouth.
