Potential Issues with the use of Barcoding in Medicine Supply Chain

Disclaimer: The information contained on this page forms part of my GPC CPD portfolio and is therefore my personal opinion and in no way reflects the opinion or policy of my employer.

Accidental Reuse of EAN-13 Barcode

In the following example, the same EAN code was printed on the packaging for two very different medications.  In any system that relied on each medicine having a unique EAN barcode for identification within the system then this could potentially be a very serious problem.

Sodium Chloride with the EAN code: 5099602364370

Potassium Chloride with the EAN code: 5099602364370
