The following Opensource or free programs are useful to have a look at if you are in a similar kind of line of work as I am.  Listed in no particular order.

Top 10 Free Software Utilities for Pharmacy IT Administrators
Notepad++ - A very useful program whether for editing CONFIG files or writing some code.
Web-Harvest - Awesome tool that enables you to harvest data from web sites.
Paint.Net - Great for annotating screenshots or manipulating images. The blur tool is excellent for masking confidential data.
7-Zip - A great little compression/extraction tool, much more sophisticated than the one built into Windows.
Cute PDF Writer - Free “Print to PDF” utility. The Cute PDF professional offering is also impressive.
Bulk Rename Utility - A great utility for renaming batches of files.Does exactly what it says on the tin!
MyDefrag 4.0 - One of the better disk defrag tools that I have come across.
Filezilla - I love Filezilla and the only tool I’ll use for FTP!
Keepass - A great opensource password storage tool, ideal for place for storing all of those admin passwords.

Web Developer Plugin
 - An amazing web development plugin for Chrome and Firefox from Chris Pederick. I’m just assuming you’ll be allowed to install one of these browsers :-)
